The opener appeared to be working fine, so our first thought was a broken spring. Looking at the spring assembly brought our attention to the lift cables, and there we found the problem. The left cable was frayed and tangled up, which caused the right one to become dangerously stretched from the unbalanced weight. There was nothing to do for it but disconnect the opener, unhook both cables, and unspool and remove them. We cleaned and oiled the spools before installing the new lift cables.
